Hours
  • Agents must complete 24 hours of continuing education every 2 years.
Requirements
  • 3 hours of Ethics.
  • Agents who handle long term care products will need to complete an initial 6 hour special education course with 4 hour refresher courses required for subsequent renewals.
  • Agents new requirement for self-study courses limit the number of course hours to 8 in a 24 hours period. For insurance, if someone orders a 16 hour course, it cannot be completed any sooner than the 2nd day from purchase. The new rule was effective April 14, 2005.
  • Flood Requirement: All Washington licensed insurance agents who sell flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program will be required to comply with the minimum training requirements established by the Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2004, currently a 3-hour training course based on a curriculum outline established by FEMA
Compliance Date
  • Every Agent must complete their continuing education requirements by their birthday, every 2 years.
Excess Hours
  • Carryover hours are not permitted.
Course Repetition
  • Courses may not be taken more then once in a 3 year period.

Course Presentation

  • Continuing education courses may be either self-study or classroom.
Examination
  • If the course taken is self-study the Agent must pass a non-monitored examination.
  • If the courses taken is a classroom courses there is no examination.
  • Certificates are issued within 15 days of course completion.
Required for
Self-Study Courses
  • The completion date for a self-study course must be reasonable in relation to the purchase date to allow for adequate time for course completion. For example, if a course is approved for twenty-four hours of continuing education credit, there must be at least three days difference between the course purchase and the completion dates. This information will be verified on the continuing education certificate issued for the course completion. It is assumed that no more than eight course hours can be completed in a single twenty-four hour period.
