Hours
  • Agents with a single license needs 16 hours of continuing education 12/31 of even number years.
  • Agents with more than one license needs 24 hours of continuing education 12/31 of even number years.
Requirements
  • If an Agent has a combined license, the Agent must complete 24 hours of CE every 2 years: Life & Health and Property & Casualty, the Agent must complete at least 8 hours in both Life & Health and Property & Casualty courses and ensuring that two hours qualify as “Law and Regulations” credits.
  • 2 hours of Laws and Regulations credits must be completed by all producers during each biennium as part of their requirement.
  • If an Agent holds one license, Life and Annuities license or a Health Agent license or both shall complete 16 hours of CE if you hold one license type and ensuring that two hours qualify as “Law and Regulations” credits.
  • An Insurance Agent who sells Flood Insurance, must complete the NFIP course. There is not an additional CE compliance requirement for Flood Insurance beyond the normal CE requirements.
  • Title Agents need to complete 16 hours of CE.
  • Any Agent who holds a Personal Lines license or a Property and Casualty license shall complete 16 hours of CE and ensuring that two hours qualify as “Law and Regulations” credits.
  • Licensed Agents may not sell a Partnership Policy in Virginia unless and until they have received the requisite eight (8) hours of initial training. The initial training must consist of six (6) hours of general LTC topics and two (2) hours of LTC Partnership topics. Thereafter, Agents must receive at least four (4) hours of ongoing training every twenty-four (24) months. The ongoing training must consist of two (2) hours of general LTC topics and two (2) hours of LTC Partnership topics.
CE Exemptions
  • Agents who have been licensed continuously for 20 years and are age 65 or older are exempt of continuing education upon request to the D.O.I.
Compliance Date
  • Every agent must complete their Continuing Education requirements by December 31st every even-numbers year.

Key Dates for the 2009-2010 Biennium Period

  • December 31, 2010 - All coursework for the biennium must be completed
  • February 28, 2011 - Deadline for submission of proof of course compliance and Payment of a nonrefundable $15.00 reporting/processing fee to Pearson Vue without penalty (license renewal.)
  • March 31, 2011 - Final submission deadline for submission of proof of course completion and nonrefundable $15.00 processing fee (license renewal) if not already paid, plus a $250.00 late filing penalty.
  • April 15, 2011 - Virginia Bureau of Insurance issues noncompliance warning letters.
Excess Hours
  • Excess hours may be carried forward to the next compliance period.
Course Repetition
  • Courses may not be taken more than once in each 2 year compliance period.

Course Presentation

  • Continuing education courses may be either self-study or classroom.
Examination
  • If the course taken is self-study, the agent must pass a monitored examination. The monitor must be a disinterested third party; someone without employment or family relationship to the agent.
  • If the course taken is a classroom, there is no examination.

All course completions are submited to Sircon. To view the Virginia Agent's transcript log on to Virginia's website @ www.virginiainsurancece.com. Virginia Insurance license number, SSN, National Producer Number, or Division of Motor Vehicle License Number can be used for roster submission.
