Hours
  • All resident licensees holding a major line of authority (except Title) will be required to complete 24 credit hours including 3 credit hours of Ethics before the last day of the Producer's birth month renewal every two years.
  • Agents license continuously for 25 years from the current renewal year only need 8 hours.
  • Agents may only take 50% of their required CE credit hours via a Correspondence course. The other 50% via classroom training. If an Agent has a dual license (L/H & P/C) 50% in each line of Authority - 50% in classroom and 50% correspondence course.
  • Courses must be approved for the lines of insurance for which the Agent is licensed.
  • Title Agents are required 16 credit hours (can take any Property & Casualty course) including 3 hours of Ethics.
Requirements
  • Agents with a Property & Casualty License who sell Homeowners Insurance needs to complete 2 hours of credit that directly relates to Flood Insurance prior to September 30, 2007.

Long Term Care Requirements:

  • Long Term Care Requirements: If a producer sells, solicits or negotiates long term care insurance, the continuing education requirement under Maryland law requires a producer to complete 2 continuing education hours in long term care insurance.
  • As of September 10, 2007, a producer who sells, solicits, or negotiates long term care insurance must complete a one-time TRAINING PROGRAM REQUIREMENT which consists of a minimum of 8 hours of long term care education followed by and ongoing training requirement of a least 4 hours to be completed every 24 months. This training requirement must be completed by September 10, 2008.

Flood Insurance Requirements:

  • Agents who sell Flood Insurance must complete 2 hours on flood insurance every renewal cycle that flood insurance is sold. This is an ongoing renewal requirement which must be completed at each Renewal period for any licensee selling Flood Insurance.
  • If an Agent has been licensed 25 years or more and have a combined license you must take 2 hours in Life & Health and 2 hours in Property & Casualty courses and the balance in either L&H or P&C Courses.
  • Individuals wishing to sell LTC must complete 2 hours of LTC education prior to selling and then biennially thereafter. The 2 hours counts towards the CE requirement. In addition: Maryland has adopted a Regulation on Producer Training Requirements for Long Term Care insurance under COMAR 31.14.04.34. As of September 10, 2007, a producer who sells, solicits, or negotiates long term care insurance MUST complete a one-time TRAINING PROGRAM REQUIREMENT which consists of a minimum of 8 hours of long term care education followed by an ongoing training requirement of at least 4 hours to be completed every 24 months. This training requirement must be completed by September 10, 2008. A producer who was NOT selling, soliciting, or negotiating long term care insurance prior to September 10, 2007 must complete the one-time training program of at least 8 hours, BEFORE selling, soliciting or negotiating any long term care insurance. The ongoing training requirement of at least 4 hours to be completed every 24 months applies to the person who continues to sell, solicit or negotiate long term care insurance.

 

Compliance Date
  • Every Agent must complete their continuing education requirements before their license is renewed. CE must be taken before the expiration date of the license.
Excess Hours
  • Carryover hours are not permitted
Course Repetition
  • Courses may not be taken within the same renewal period. If a course is taken during 2 consecutive renewal periods, there must be at least 6 months between the courses completion dates in order to receive credit.

Course Presentation

  • Continuing education courses may be either self-study or classroom.
Examination
  • If the course taken is self-study, the Agent must pass a non-monitored examination.
  • If the course taken is a classroom there is no examination.
