Hours
  • Agents must complete 36 hours of continuing education triennially, and (3) hours of Ethics (effective January 1, 2007)
Requirements
  • 3 hours must be in Ethics
    Flood Insurance: Any Agent selling Property Insurance (federal flood insurance) must complete the required courseby April 1, 2008.
    The Federal Law does not specify a date by which producers must complete the required flood insurance training - therefore the Iowa Department of Insurance determined a deadline date.
    All producers who wish to sell fixed index life or annuity products on or after January 1, 2008 must a complete a 4 credit hour training course.
    Effective 1/1/2009: a one-time training course of at least 4 CE credits in subjects related to long-term care insurance must be completed prior to selling any long-term care insurance and thereafter. Producers wishing to continue to sell long-term care insurance, ongoing training of 3 CE credits in subjects related to long-term care insurance must be completed for each CE term.

  • Carryover hours are not permitted.
Course Repetition
  • Producer may not receive credit for the same course more than once during a CE term.
Course Presentation

  • Only 18 hours of continuing education courses may be in self-study and the balance of 18 hours in a classroom.
    or all 36 hours may be completed in a classroom.
Examination
  • If the course taken is self-study, the agent must pass a monitored examination. (Monitor is another licensed producer)
    If the course taken is a classroom course, there is no examination.
